And when he was 17 his mom was killed by a drunk off duty police officer. The depressing closer, “My Mummy’s Dead,” is also about the pain of losing his mother.
The second track, “Hold On,” is a very simple song that could be seen as a “throwaway” especially with the ridiculous “cookie!” that you can hear at about 1 minute into the song. But I personally really love the song.
Plastic Ono Band features some of Lennon’s most heavy tracks including “I Found Out” which has an awesomely raunchy guitar tone and some fantastic lyrics and “Well Well Well” which showcases the “primal scream” method he had been using in his therapy at the time.
The guitar part of “Look at Me” sounds a lot like “Julia” from The White Album but that’s never kept me from enjoying it. It is such a pretty song that I can’t resist it. What really makes this album work so wonderfully is the contrast between the beautiful tunes like “Look at Me,” “Love,” and “Hold On” and the heavy songs like “Working Class Hero,” “I Found Out,” and “Well Well Well.” And then there’s “God” which I don’t think much of musically but which has some of Lennon’s most interesting lyrics.
